Sachibondu is a mission and health centre in the North West Province of Zambia

Sachibondu is a mission and health centre in the North West Province of Zambia, near the borders with Angola and The Congo. The nearest town, Mwinilunga, is a 40 minute drive away, so the clinic at Sachibondu is essential to support the local Lunda people. The clinic is run by British nurse, Ruth Wallis, who has lived out in Zambia for over 35 years. Much of her time is spent serving the local people and supporting the many victims of AIDS and HIV. She also runs nutrition clinics and health education programmes, supported by a dedicated team of health workers. Around 500 patients come through the clinic each month, and they really do depend on the care offered at Sachibondu: it’s a matter of life or death.

As well as the clinic, there is a pre-school, primary school, Bible school, trade school and mechanics’ workshop, all of which help to support the local community. There is also an emphasis on farming and being self-sufficient through cultivation and selling local produce.
